Russia’s Black Sea flagship, which fired on heroic border guards on Snake Island, has exploded and its crew attempted to evacuate after being hit by rockets, a Ukrainian official said.

The Interfax news agency quoted the Russian Ministry of Defense as saying that the missile cruiser Moskva was badly damaged after ammunition on board the ship exploded.

“Ammunition exploded as a result of a fire on the missile cruiser Moskva,” it said in a statement.

Elsewhere, Maksym Marchenko, governor of the region around the Black Sea port of Odessa, triumphantly claimed in an online post that the 12,500-ton ship was hit by two missiles, without providing any evidence.

“Neptune missiles guarding the Black Sea have caused very serious damage,” he said in an online post.

The 600-foot flagship was used by the Russians as a show of force in the Black Sea.

The Moskva was the ship that fired on 13 defiant border guards on Snake Island early in the invasion, where one of the Ukrainians famously said, “Fuck off,” after being told to surrender.

Ukraine’s presidential aide Oleksiy Arestovych reportedly said in a YouTube video that the ship was “burning badly.”

He said: “It burns badly. Just now. And with this stormy sea, it is not known if they can get help.

“There are 510 crew members. We don’t understand what happened.”

Last month Ukraine said it had destroyed a large Russian landing support ship, the Orsk, in the smaller Sea of Azov northeast of the Black Sea. Moscow has not commented on what happened to the ship.

It comes as Ukraine has warned that Russia is stepping up attempts in the south and east to take full control of Mariupol, the first major city to fall.

Western governments are sending more military aid to strengthen Kyiv.

Russia’s Defense Ministry on Wednesday said 1,026 soldiers from Ukraine’s 36th Naval Brigade, including 162 officers, had surrendered in Mariupol, which has been under siege for weeks, and that the port is completely under its control.

Capture of the Azovstal industrial zone, where the Marines are hiding, would give the Russians full control of Ukraine’s main Azov Sea port, strengthen a southern land corridor and expand occupation of the country’s east.

Ukraine’s General Staff said Russian troops would attack Azovstal and the port, but a Defense Ministry spokesman said he had no information about a surrender.

“Russian forces are stepping up activities on the southern and eastern fronts and trying to avenge their defeats,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a video address on Wednesday evening.

Flames were reported to have erupted from the Azovstal area on Tuesday, a day after Ukraine’s 36th Naval Brigade said its troops had run out of ammunition.

The United States has announced an additional $800 million in military aid, including artillery systems, armored personnel carriers and helicopters, bringing total US military aid to more than $2.5 billion. France and Germany also agreed more.

Senior US officials are considering sending a senior cabinet minister like Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Austin Lloyd to Kyiv as a show of solidarity, a source familiar with the situation said.

Russia will consider US and NATO vehicles transporting weapons on Ukrainian territory as legitimate military targets, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told the TASS news agency.

It will impose sanctions on 398 members of the US House of Representatives and 87 Canadian senators, Interfax quoted the State Department as saying after Washington targeted 328 members of Russia’s lower house.

Ukraine says tens of thousands of people are believed to have been killed in Mariupol and accuses Russia of blocking aid convoys to civilians stranded there.

Moscow has blamed Ukraine for the deaths of civilians and accused Kyiv of denigrating Russian forces.
