A Russian military leader has branded the invasion of Ukraine a failure on live television as Putin’s grip on his troops wanes.
Commander Igor Girkin, also known by his military name Igor Strelkov, admitted this Wladimir Putin had not achieved any strategic successes anywhere in Ukraine.
Since launching its attack last month, Russia has been unable to capture the capital Kyiv or make any significant advances as the UK MoD described the battlefield in the country’s north as “largely static”.
But in a shocking admission on live Russian television, army veteran and former FSB officer Mr Girkin predicted a “tiring and bloody” war for the Russian Federation.
He told OSN TV: “29 days of ‘military special operations’ have passed.
“Nowhere, in any direction, were strategic successes achieved, only operational successes.
“In addition, the enemy is relatively successful in mobilizing and counterattacking.
“Of course, Konashenkov never mentions that in his reports.”
Major General Igor Konashenkov is the main spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry and regularly provides television news on the progress of the Russian invasion.
The former Russian spy agent added: “Unfortunately, I can say that my most pessimistic predictions that we will be drawn into a bloody, long, exhausting and extremely dangerous war for the Russian Federation are completely justified at the moment.”
Mr Girkin played a key role in the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and later led the separatist forces of the Donetsk People’s Republic in eastern Ukraine, reports The Express.
Giorgi Revishvili, a defense expert at King’s College London, tweeted: “The notorious Igor Girkin (Strelkov) admitted that Russia has not achieved any strategic objective in Ukraine and has few operational successes.
“He also noted that the Ukrainian armed forces effectively mobilized resources, regrouped in a timely manner and launched counterattacks.”
Last week, Mr Girkin’s adviser Igor Druz warned that President Putin could be forced to resign if he doesn’t take Ukraine.
He wrote: “I hope that the Ukrainian tragedy will not become either the tragedy of Russia or the personal tragedy of Putin.”
