Ukraine: Explosions reported by Russian military ‘throw stun grenades’

The Russian military has used rape as a ‘weapon of war’ against Ukrainian civilians in the latest war crimes charges against Vladimir Putin’s forces.

The UK’s ambassador to Ukraine said today she was aware of reports of women and girls being raped in front of their families, describing it as an “act of willful submission”. .

Heartbreaking testimonies uncovered by human rights groups have prompted calls for the military to be held accountable for its actions.

The charity Human Rights Watch (HRW) says it has discovered evidence of “unspeakable, intentional and violent atrocities” against Ukrainian civilians, adding it should be investigated as a war crime.

Melinda Simmons, British Ambassador to Ukraine, posted on Twitter: “Rape is a weapon of war. Although we don’t know the full extent of its use in Ukraine yet it is clearly part of the arsenal. (Russia).

“Women are raped in front of their children, girls are raped in front of their families, as an act of willful submission. Rape is a war crime.”

Describe her ordeal, a Ukrainian woman told Human Rights Watch that she is lucky to be alive after being raped by a Russian soldier’s gun several times.

The 31-year-old woman, identified as Olha – not her real name – told HRW she was targeted after Russian troops arrived in Malaya Rohan, a village in the Kharkiv region of the country.

Olha, who has a five-year-old son, is put in a classroom in the school where she and her family are sheltered by a soldier, who tells her he is 20 years old.

Describing her harrowing ordeal, she said: “He told me to give him [oral sex].

“The whole time he was holding the gun near my temple or to my face. Twice he shot at the ceiling and said it was to give me ‘motivation’.”

She told human rights officers.

Olha continued: “While I was getting dressed, the soldier told me he was Russian, his name was [name withheld] and he’s 20 years old.

“He said I reminded him of a girl he went to at the same school.”

When she refused to take the property to stay with him in class, he put a knife to her neck and raped her again, Olha said.

He also hit her several times in the face.

Olha, who was able to flee to Kharkiv and seek medical attention now plans to file a report with the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office, HRW said.

Hugh Williamson, the charity’s Europe and Central Asia regional director, said: “The cases that we’ve documented are intentional cruelty and unspeakable violence against Ukrainian civilians. .

“Rape, murder and other acts of violence against persons detained by Russian forces should be investigated as war crimes.”

“Russia has an international legal obligation to objectively investigate alleged war crimes committed by its troops,” he continued.

“Commanders should recognize that failure to take action against murder and rape could expose them to personal responsibility for war crimes as a matter of command responsibility.”

A resident of Mala Rohan described a very similar story of a 27-year-old woman with a five-year-old daughter being raped by an underage Russian soldier.

55-year-old man, whose name is Sergei, told The Independent : “The soldier who did it was a young man, 19 years old. His name is Vladimir. He had been drinking all day before raping the poor girl.

“He’s lost control.”

He said this is happening because the Russian military “doesn’t seem to have much discipline”.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba today accused Russia of carrying out a deliberate “massacre” in the town of Bucha, a suburb of Kyiv, and called on the G7 to impose “cruel” new sanctions on Moscow.

“We are still collecting and searching for the bodies, but the number is already in the hundreds.

“Deads are lying in the streets. They kill civilians while there and when they leave these villages and towns,” the ministry quoted him as saying on Twitter.

Russia has so far not commented publicly on the claims.

Moscow has repeatedly denied Ukraine’s claims in the past that it has targeted civilians.
