A Russian soldier is said to have killed a man and raped his wife amid a storm of claims that invading forces in Ukraine have sexually abused women.

Ukrainian Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova said a Russian soldier was identified after he murdered a man and raped his wife in the Brovarskyi district of Kyiv.

The Kyiv Independent tweeted: ” In a village in Brovarskyi district, a Russian soldier murdered a man and together with another soldier raped his wife, Iryna Venediktova said. One of them has been identified and is now wanted.”

A woman has also claimed that other women were raped and civilians shot dead in the town of Irpin, on the outskirts of Kyiv.

Images were shown around the world of the horrors in Irpin, which saw heavy shelling by the Russian army, killing people fleeing burning or reduced houses.

The panic could be seen on the faces of vulnerable people as they attempted to flee the city, which eventually fell to the invading Russians.

Now there are allegations of atrocities committed by Vladimir Putin’s troops in Irpin.

Anastasia Taran, 30, who managed to escape Irpin, claims civilians were raped and killed in a “hell”.

she said : “Irpin is hell. There are a lot of Russian soldiers out there who just shoot at people entering private houses and at best just step out of their houses.

“They rape women and the dead are just dumped. They open the basements where people are hiding and shoot them.”

Anastasia from Enerhodar used to work as a waitress in Irpin and now shares tips on Instagram with others on how to get out of town.

“Our checkpoint is in front of the bridge, you have to be very careful there because the occupiers are shooting at it,” she said.

“We came under mortar fire, the explosions were 50-100 meters from us. You have to listen carefully to the instructions of our soldiers: if they shout ‘Heaven’ it means you have to hide, if they shout ‘Run’ it means you have to flee to the nearest dugout.”

There have been other allegations that Russian soldiers have sexually assaulted civilians in Ukraine.

There was also a picture on social media of a captured Russian soldier wearing condoms.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and MP Lesia Vasylenko have both spoken out about rapes and assaults by Russian troops.

Ms Vasylenko said there were reports of Russian troops sexually abusing seniors who were unable to flee the outskirts of Kyiv.

She said: “We are talking about seniors in Ukraine. It is an extremely painful subject for us to take up, but unfortunately it is still the beginning of the atrocities that will continue.

“Putin’s army commits war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

Now more than 3.5 million Ukrainians have been forced to flee during Putin’s 27-day invasion.

Having failed to capture the capital, Kyiv, or any other major city with a swift offensive, Russia is even waging a war of attrition that has reduced some urban areas to rubble and raised fears in the West that the conflict could escalate a nuclear war.

The United Nations human rights office in Geneva said on Tuesday it had killed 953 civilians and injured 1,557 since the invasion. The Kremlin denies attacks on civilians.

Western officials said Russian forces were bogged down around Kyiv but were making some progress to the south and east. Ukrainian fighters are fighting off Russian troops in some places but are unable to push them back, they said.
