Ukraine: Russian prisoners of war cry, not knowing why they joined the war

The captured Russian soldiers broke down in tears as they told their families they had been ‘dropped off’ in Ukraine.

Prisoners of war were interviewed on camera by Ukrainian forces and said they were used as cannon fodder during the war.

It happened after Ukraine announced that it had destroyed 6,000 Russian soldiers in the first six days of the invasion.

Footage is now being shared online showing some of the captured invaders complaining about the war.

One arrestee was videotaped talking to his mother on the phone, telling her: “They killed us, everyone killed everyone.”

The soldier then cried and told his mother ‘I love you too’.

In another clip, another Russian prisoner said: “We came to train. We were deceived and that is why I am here”.

His comrade added: “At first we were told that we were going to train. After we were finally sent to the front line, everyone was demoralized.

“Nobody wanted to fight but we were told that we would be enemies of the state and because of its wartime we might even be shot.

“We were thrown like ‘gunshots’, even though the people in our unit at least don’t want this war, they just want to go home and want peace.”

Another soldier, who suffered horrific wounds all over his face and body, also appeared in an interview with his captors.

ShadowBreak founder Samuel Cardillo says he has received recordings from amateurs listening to the conversations.

“It’s basically the Russians transmitting over analog. So when they ask for air support, or any form of support, you hear helicopters or fighter jets. .”

“We were told we would be welcomed with open arms, but they called us fascists,” a Russian soldier is said to have texted his mother in a message Serhiy Kyslytsia said. , special envoy for Ukraine, read aloud at the UN.

“Mom, I’m in Ukraine. This is a real war. I’m scared, we’re shooting at everyone, even civilians.”

Article 13 of the Geneva convention states that prisoners of war must be treated humanely and “protected, in particular against acts of violence or intimidation and against insults and public curiosity.” “.

Valentina Melnikova, a veteran Russian human rights activist, also said groups of soldiers’ mothers have received calls from young men fearing being called to join the invasion.

Mr. Cardillo continued: “There are periods when we hear them [Russian soldiers] crying in battle, a period in which they insult each other – clearly not a sign of great morale. There were cases where they shot each other, in other cases they had to transport corpses back to their forward operating base. Many times you can hear them not at their highest level of happiness. “
