Russian base hit by US missile from Ukraine

Russian military hiding in a school in Ukraine was hit by a new missile supplied by the US, according to Ukrainian forces.

The footage shows the havoc wreaked at the school, which was used as a command post by Vladimir Putin’s forces, they say.

Ukraine believes at least 40 Russian military personnel were killed in the attack in Izyum, Kharkiv region.

Small fires surrounded the spot where windows were smashed and debris covered the ground.

It is the first hit on a Russian military command position by the medium-range, precision-guided weapon.

The strike at Izyum Lyceum #2 affected the HIMARS High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, which have a range of about 43 miles.

They were from the 20th Army of the Western Military District of the Russian Armed Forces, unit 89425, originally based in Voronezh.

“All personnel stationed at the command post have been demilitarized – over 40 people,” a spokesman for Ukraine said.

Russia acknowledged that the attack came from the US-supplied HIMARS.

The Kremlin claimed the strike hit a hospital and that the Ukrainian claim was meant to “appease a panicked Ukrainian army with illusory victories.”

However, Russian military vehicles seen outside the school indicate that it was used for military purposes by the invading army.

Footage had previously been released showing the alleged first use of HIMARS by the Ukrainians.

Footage also emerged Monday of Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu visiting the front lines in Ukraine for the first time.

Shoigu, 67, made his first visit to an undisclosed Ukrainian location to speak to troops in the war zone and try to regain control of the war in Ukraine.

Russia has not disclosed the location, but there is strong speculation that it was Mariupol in the blitz which its forces captured from Ukraine.

Russian state television boasted that Shoigu would visit major cities like Kyiv, Odessa and Mykolaiv in the future once the Russian invasion had conquered the major cities of Ukraine.

The defense minister is an army general seen as a likely successor to Russian President Vladimir Putin, and his visit was seen as a way to send the “I’m in control” message on his first visit to a war zone.
