According to reports, a regiment of elite Russian fighters suffered heavy losses in the face of fierce Ukrainian resistance.

The 331st Guards Parachute Regiment, considered one of the most feared and well-trained forces in the Russian army, fought for the city of Ilovaisk in the Donbas in 2014.

Their participation in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine this year, and the deaths they have suffered, are signs that the invasion did not go as planned.

The commanding officer of the regiment, Colonel Sergei Sukharev, was killed in Ukraine on March 13 – a major blow to any military unit.

His Deputy Major Sergei Krylov was killed along with him.

According to the BBC, in the month since the invasion began, at least 37 other members of Force 331 have lost their lives in Ukraine.

These men were part of a unit entering Ukraine from Belarus, led by Russian airborne troops, tasked with capturing Kyiv.

Like many other regiments, they soon became mired in fierce resistance and logistical difficulties.

Videos circulating online show vehicles marked VDV – the symbol of Russia’s airborne troops – wrecked and abandoned in villages near the capital.

While the Kremlin has not yet announced the deaths of its men in Ukraine, Russians have posted tributes to the fallen soldiers on the social network V’Kontakte.

One was established Sergeant Sergei Duganov, member of the 331st Division.

“Nobody knows anything,” one woman wrote on it, the BBC reported.

“The 331st Regiment is disappearing. Almost every day, pictures of our Kostroma boys are released. It gives me shivers. What’s going on? When is this going to end? When will this be over? Will people stop dying?”

The deaths of so many members of the 331st Division would deal a blow to the Russian military, partly due to their reputation.

In a video posted online last May, a general told soldiers of the 331st Parachute Regiment that they were “the best of the best”.

Along with serving in the Balkans, Chechnya and Donbas, they regularly participate in parades on Moscow’s Red Square.

However many of them died, it was clear that the 331 failed to achieve their central mission of circling and then capturing Kyiv.

Earlier this week, the Kremlin announced plans to focus its invasion efforts on the east of the country, in what many have interpreted as an acceptance that the army is pulled too thin.

This morning, Volodymyr Zelenskiy warned that retreating Russian forces were creating “a complete disaster” by leaving mines in their homes as they retreated eastward.

“They are exploiting the whole territory,” the Ukrainian president said.

“They are mining houses, mining equipment, even the bodies of people who have perished. There are so many wires, so many other dangers.”

Zelensky went on to urge Russian families not to let their young men sign up for military service as the Kremlin’s annual conscription begins.

“We don’t need more dead people here. Save your kids so they don’t turn into villains,” he said.

Commander Sergei Krylov also died
