Russia’s Moskva warship sinks in the Black Sea – POLITICO

The Russian Navy’s Black Sea flagship, the missile cruiser Moskva, sank late Thursday, a day after Ukraine said it had fired missiles at the warship.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, as reported by state media Tass, the ship was sank during a towing operation. “During the towing of the Moskva cruiser to the port of destination, the ship lost stability due to damage to the hull received during the fire from the detonation of ammunition. In stormy sea conditions, the ship sank,” the ministry claimed.

Russian authorities first said the ship was “seriously damaged” by a fire on board, without admitting an attack. The 500 crew members were evacuated, the Russian ministry said.

Ukraine had said its military had fired on the Moskva. “Neptune missiles guarding the Black Sea caused very serious damage to the Russian ship,” Maksym Marchenko, the head of the Odessa regional military administration, told Telegram.

The Moskva and her crew were memorably told to fuck themselves by a Ukrainian soldier during the attack on Snake Island at the start of the Russian invasion.

There were explosions early Friday heard in Kyiv, Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko wrote on Twitter. Lawmakers said three explosions could be heard in the capital, adding that “most likely [Russian President Vladimir] Putin is angry about the sinking of the Moscow River.”

In a late night address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commended Ukrainians for surviving 50 days under the Russian invasion and paid tribute to “those who have shown that Russian ships can only … get to the bottom”.
