At the start of the brutal conflict, in which Russia is said to have suffered over 30,000 casualties, he said he longed to test his wargame skills in a real conflict.

“To be honest, I want to be in a real fight,” he said.

“I hope that my loved ones will understand this wish when the time comes.”

He was from the village of Verkh-Uimon in the remote Altai Mountains of Siberia.

The Kremlin has lost at least 11 generals and 52 colonels in the brutal conflict, but despite the heavy toll, there is little sign of the mass anti-Putin dissent in authoritarian Russia that the West hoped to see.

Earlier this month, a Russian fighter went public with his grievances about exhaustion and combat conditions in eastern Ukraine as the war shows no sign of abating.

A soldier who fought near Kyiv, Kharkiv and is now in eastern Ukraine complained to the Guardian of his desperate exhaustion.

Andrei, who serves with the 37th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade based in Buryatia, Siberia, said he even contacted a lawyer to find out if his deployment to the front lines was even legal.

He also complained that he hadn’t seen his wife in months.

“I’ve been fighting in Ukraine since the beginning of the war, it’s been more than three months now,” Andrei said.

“It’s exhausting, my whole unit wants a break but our leadership has said they can’t replace us at the moment.”

The ex-British Army comrade of a British soldier sentenced to death in Ukraine. has since branded the “disgraceful” verdict as a war crime.

Aiden Aslin, 28, and British Army veteran Shaun Pinner, 48, have been found guilty at a show trial in the self-declared Donetsk People’s Republic, a proxy for the Kremlin, of seizing power by force.

Colonel Richard Kemp, former commander of British forces in Afghanistan, is a former comrade of Mr Pinner’s as they served together in the same Royal Anglian Regiment.

He has condemned the sentencing of both men as he spoke about Mr Pinner, from Bedfordshire, saying: “It is a disgrace and I condemn it in the strongest possible terms.

“Shaun is a soldier and should be treated as one.”
