Former Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs has told a jury about the “rough” sex life he enjoyed with his partner, who has accused him of “headbutting” her during an argument at home.
Iggs also described “attempting to hustle ex-girlfriend Kate Greville at the Stafford Hotel in London in 2019 during an argument after she claimed she was “holding hands” with a sports presenter on a nightclub dance floor earlier that night.
The 48-year-old, who wore a gray suit on his second day at Manchester Crown Court, told jurors there had been another drunken argument in Dubai in 2020 after he called Ms Greville by the name of his ex-wife Stacey. tongue slip
Giggs is on trial on charges of assaulting Ms Greville, 38, and her younger sister Emma Greville, 26, at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, on November 1, 2020.
He is also accused of using controlling and coercive behavior towards his ex.
Giggs QC Chris Daw asked the former United winger if he pressured Ms Greville to have sex and the footballer replied it was “always mutual”.
Mr Daw went through a series of messages between Giggs and Ms Greville in 2017.
One, from Ms Greville to Giggs, said: “I want you so bad. Rough xx.”
Giggs replied: “Really? I’m scared of hurting you.”
Ms Greville said: “I want it to hurt a little, not in a weird way, I just want you to shock and surprise me.”
Responding to a message from Giggs that it was “a fine line,” Ms Greville then said, “Then we must just have fun finding that line.”
When asked if the couple share the same interest in rough sex, Giggs replied, “It looks like Kate after that exchange, but throughout the relationship it’s just been mutual.”
Mr Daw then asked for a picture that Giggs sent to wife Greville with the message “Bully” showing a scratch on his neck which Giggs said was from around the time they had sex.
Ms Greville replied: “Oops sorry baby. I have a bruise on my arm but you can’t see it because I’m so tan.”
When asked about the nature of his sex life with Ms. Greville during this time, Giggs said, “The nature was the same as always — a healthy sex life and at times it could get rough.”
Ms Greville has claimed Giggs threw a bag containing a laptop at her head in December 2019, throwing her out of bed and dumping her naked in a hotel corridor.
When asked about the alleged incident at the Stafford Hotel, Giggs said the couple were in the capital for his agent’s Christmas party, which included a mini-golf tournament, a trip to Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland and a nightclub visit.
During the golf event, Giggs was paired with a sports presenter, whom he described in court as “an attractive lady.”
He claimed Ms Greville later accused him of flirting with the woman, although he denied the allegation.
In a Bavarian beer garden tent in Hyde Park, he claimed Ms Greville told him: “You kept looking at her, I watched you, you were definitely flirting.”
Giggs told the judges: “I was a bit embarrassed that we were fighting. i went alone
“I went to the club where we’re going next. It was a long walk.”
In a nightclub booth overlooking the dance floor, he said: “I sat down and had a clear view of Kate and one of the male sports presenters present.
“They danced together, holding hands and looking into each other’s eyes.
“I could not believe it. I said to my agent, ‘I’m going’, took a cab and went back to the hotel.”
He denied there had been any confrontations at the club, but when Ms Greville arrived at the hotel “about an hour” after Giggs, an argument began over her contact with the male presenter.
Giggs said: “Kate then tried to get into bed and I said ‘I’m not sleeping with you tonight’.
“There was a suite in the room and I said, ‘You can sleep in the area where there is a couch.'”
He said he threw a Louis Vuitton holdall toward the bed.
Giggs added: “Kate was still trying to get into bed.
“I tried to shove her into the lounge area.
“Then the argument fizzled out pretty quickly and we both ended up spending the night together.”
When asked if he “did anything physical to her that night,” Giggs replied, “No, I didn’t.”
“We were both pretty drunk and fell asleep.”
Jurors heard the couple had separated for several weeks around Christmas that year, but reconciled and vacationed in Dubai in February 2020.
Giggs described how the “lovely holiday” was marred on the penultimate day when he addressed them – “both quite drunk” – by his ex-wife’s name.
He said: “She (Kate) took it as a snide remark, but I didn’t mean it – it was just a slip of the tongue.”
Giggs flew home alone “devastated” while wife Greville stayed with friends.
Ms Greville has claimed that during the argument, Giggs grabbed her bag and pulled her arm “really hard”, causing her to fall.
During the lockdown, Ms Greville moved into Giggs’ house and previously described to a jury what it was like “hell”.
But Giggs said, “It was a really happy time from my point of view,” adding that they “fighted” but didn’t have “big arguments.”
He described how he called “a team meeting” to discuss how to load the house’s dishwasher and told those present, “Everyone, can you please put the tablespoons the right way around.”
In June 2020, Ms Greville moved out, and Giggs said in an email he sent her with the subject line “C***!!!” there was “no excuse at all” for his choice of language.
Giggs also claimed he was “very supportive” of Ms Greville building her own PR business and claims to the contrary are “not true”.
He denied ever stopping her from having her own home, being in control of her money and trying to control her relationships with friends and family.
Giggs denies wrongdoing and the trial continues.
