Ryan Giggs’ ex photo of bruised lip but only to stop paps told court

Ryan Giggs’ ex-girlfriend denied she staged a newspaper photo to “incite the public against him” in the days after he allegedly headbutted her.

R manager Kate Greville, 36, told Manchester Crown Court yesterday she made sure the picture was taken of her walking her dog on a country lane because she wanted the media to leave her doorstep.

She claimed the former Manchester United footballer grabbed her by the shoulders, looked her in the eyes and headbutted her in the face after an argument at her home in Worsley, Greater Manchester on November 1, 2020.

A jury at Giggs’ (48) trial heard an article had appeared The sun Newspaper dated November 16 with the photo and a story that read, “Living Hell. Ryan Giggs’ ex has been spotted with a bruised lip in the first appearance since the Welsh manager’s arrest.

A week earlier, on November 10, a friend wrote to her: “I’ll sell the next picture of you and get some paper from it [laughing emojis].”

Ms Greville replied: “We can put up a picture and get money for both of us. What do you think?”

The friend said, “I think so.”

Ms Greville wrote back: “We could get 5,000.”

The friend said: “And furnish our new apartment.”

Ms Greville replied: “I think more to cover my legal fees [laugh emoji].”

Three days later, her friend wrote: “Let’s fucking do this. A sofa like Molly-Mae’s would cost 10,000.”

Ms Greville said: “I have a few more stories to sell.”

The complainant further sent her friend a link The sun Article.

She then told her she looks “awful, but when I look gross it looks less staged.”

Ms Greville wrote: “I like that I look like shit to be honest.”

On cross-examination, Chris Daw QC, representing Mr Giggs, asked: “But it was staged, wasn’t it?”

Ms Greville replied: “Yes, I set it up.”

Mr Daw said: “You put up a fully staged photograph for the public where you deliberately tried to make it look like something happened to you?”

Ms Greville said: “No, I’m not talking about an injury there.”

Mr Daw said: “You have effectively tried to tell the whole world a completely false story.”

Ms Greville replied: “I’ve been trying to stop the paps from showing up on my doorstep every day. To regain control.

“Of course I had an injury and I wanted to show them the reality, but it was about stopping the photographers and the press from showing up at my family’s door two or three times a day to take pictures of me.”

Mr Daw said: “They were trying to get the public to hit on Mr Giggs.”

Ms Greville replied: “I wanted control of that first photo and then it would end because they kept harassing me.”

When asked if she beautified her look with makeup for the photo, Ms Greville replied, “No.”

Mr Daw said: “You had tiny, minor contact with Mr Giggs during the night (November 1).

“I suggest you enhanced that with makeup to make it a lot worse than it was.”

Ms Greville replied: “Not at all.”

Peter Wright QC, Prosecutor, asked Ms Greville: ‘Were you involved in the writing of? The sun Article?”

“No,” said Mrs. Greville.

Mr Wright said: “Have you ever been interviewed by anyone in the press?”

Ms Greville said: “No.”

Mr Wright continued: “Have you ever attempted to be interviewed by anyone in the press?

“No,” she repeated.

Mr. Wright asked her, “Were you left alone?”

Ms Greville said: “Not really, no.”

Mr Wright said: “Have you sold the press a story?”

Ms Greville said: “No.”

Mr. Wright asked, “Have you sold the photograph that was taken of you?”

Ms Greville said: “No.”

Mr Wright asked: “Have you ever asked for payment?”

“No,” replied the witness.

Mr Wright said: “We watched the news with your friend Courtney… and discussed what you could do. Have you ever done it?”

Ms Greville replied: “No.”

She told the court that she voluntarily told the police about the article.

Mr. Wright asked, “What was your reason for having this photograph staged?”

Ms Greville replied: “It was to prevent the press from showing up on my doorstep.

“I was afraid to go out.

“I felt trapped and my mum and dad were being harassed.”

Mr Giggs denies using controlling and coercive behavior against Ms Greville between August 2017 and November 2020, assaulting her, causing actual assault and the joint assault of her younger sister.
