Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney Present: Welcome to Wrexham

Wrexham’s stunning 3-0 win over Stockport County ensures a tense National League title race will continue to the final day.

On Sunday, the Dragons, acquired by Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney last year, beat aside a county team that entered the competition three points ahead of them. An away win would have meant Stockport’s return to the EFL, but Phil Parkinson’s side were more than worthy of victory and that means the race for the final day’s only automatic place will be played next Sunday.

Two goals from Ollie Palmer and one from Paul Mullin within 12 minutes on either side of half-time were enough for Wrexham to seal a famous victory over promotion rivals. It also puts the Dragons at 88 points, but their +48 goal difference lets them edge the Hatters at +46.

The club’s A-list owners weren’t at the Racecourse Ground – which sold out with 10,118 in attendance – but they were quick to respond to the excellent result on social media.

Reynolds wrote: “I don’t know what happens from here. Math has never been my forte. But @Wrexham_AFC fans played their part. Like they always have. I am so proud of this club.”

McElhenney was also watching from across the pond, tweeting, “The support is amazing. The piece is absolutely brilliant. Dreams come true. Here we go!!!!”

Despite today’s win, Stockport remain in control of their own destiny. Dave Challinor’s side have a home game against Torquay United on Wednesday. They close out the season with another home game against Halifax FC next Sunday, while Wrexham travel to Dagenham and Redbridge.

A four-point win for County would guarantee them a return to the EFL for the first time since their relegation in 2011, regardless of what Wrexham did in their last game. Earlier this season, the famous co-owners finally made their first trip to see a Wrexham game after the pandemic disrupted their previous travel plans.

Wrexham held the title fight until the final day of the season

And when the couple couldn’t make the arduous journey to Wales, they watched from afar. At a certain league game in March, Reynolds joked that the sight of a remarkable 6-5 win over Dover Athletic cost “nine years of his life” and apologized to his family.

He added: “Football in general has really been both the best and the worst thing that’s ever happened to me. I get it now, I get the beautiful game as well as I can get it at this point in my life, and it’s a unique brand of beautiful torture that I’ve never experienced before. I love it with all my heart and it breaks my heart quite regularly too.
