Ryanair, easyJet and British Airways Passport warning for Brits as airline rules differ

Passport rules for UK travelers going on holiday with TUI, Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, British Airways on popular bank holidays like Spain, Greece, Turkey and more

public holidays are back for the British with an increasing number of Countries ending their Covid travel ruleswhile others like France, Greece and Spain welcome British travelers with them some entry requirements still apply.

While we’ve all been navigating the Covid admin over the holidays, there’s one key document that could be easy to overlook, but it’s arguably the most important admin; the validity of your passport.

Countries have their own rules for how long your passport must be valid when you travel – some want three months after your departure date, others six.

The impact of Brexit has prompted changes to EU rules, with Britons warned by authorities to check their passports, as reported by the Liverpool echo.

TUI

All Brits on TUI flights must have a valid passport. How long it must be valid may depend on your destination, so check your country’s entry rules and requirements before booking travel.

A statement on TUI’s website explains: “Passports for UK citizens are valid for travel to any EU country up to and including the passport’s expiry date.

“The government recommends that you have at least 6 months left in your passport on the day of your trip. To travel to Europe you must have at least three months left in your passport from the day you plan to travel home.”

Some countries outside the EU also require your passport to be valid for at least three months, or even some blank pages.

All UK travelers on international flights are required to have a valid passport or visa depending on the destination chosen.

Your passport must be in good condition and signed. Note that some countries require your documents to be valid for at least three or six months from the date of departure.

For UK passport holders traveling to the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, please note that your passport must be valid for at least six months and no more than 10 years old on the date of travel.

The airline also warns passengers that non-EU passport holders must have a passport valid for at least three months from the date of departure when traveling to a Schengen member country. There are exceptions, for example, if you have been granted a residence permit or a long-term visa.

For travel outside of the European Economic Area (EEA), your passport must be valid for the duration of your intended stay, with a few exceptions:

  • For Jordan, the passport must be valid for six months beyond the period of intended stay.
  • For Turkey, the passport must be valid for six months after entry.
  • For Montenegro, the passport must be valid for at least three months.
  • For Bosnia and Herzegovina, the passport must be valid for at least three months.

Jet2

Where can I go on holiday from the UK now?

Jet2 mainly flies to EU destinations where your UK passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your departure date and be less than 10 years old.

The airline is warning passengers, “Just so you know, if you renewed your passport before your previous passport expired, additional months may be added to your new passport’s expiration date, making it longer than a ten-year count.”

The airline flies to some non-EU destinations such as Turkey and Montenegro and urges passengers to check immigration requirements before traveling.

If you are traveling on an international flight, you will need a passport or equivalent travel document that is valid for the entire duration of your trip. Your children also need their own passport, including small children under the age of two.

The airline is warning passengers that they are responsible for checking rules for each destination, with a statement on its website: “Please note that it is your responsibility to check and comply with any requirements applicable to your journey. If you do not comply with these requirements, you may not be allowed to travel or be refused entry at the destination.”

Passport rules for different countries

All countries will have their own rules regarding passport validity and expiration rules.

Here we take a look at the rules for some of the main holiday destinations, but please note that during the pandemic there may be other rules and entry requirements that you need to comply with.

The best place to find the most important information is in the UK Foreign Office’s travel advice for a destination – always check before you book or travel abroad as these rules can change quickly.

Australia

Your passport should be valid for the duration of your stay.

Barbados

Your passport should be valid for the duration of your stay.

Canada

Your passport should be valid for the duration of your stay, but if you have less than six months it may take longer to clear immigration control.

China

Your passport should be valid for at least six months.

Egypt

Your passport should be valid for at least six months.

European Union

For most European countries, HM Passport Office recommends that you have at least three months left on your passport on the day of travel. These countries are:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Croatia
  • Cyprus
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark

  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg

India

Your passport must be machine readable, contain two blank pages for your visa and be valid for at least 180 days at the time of entry into India.

Japan

Your passport should be valid for the duration of your stay.

Mexico

Your passport should be valid for the duration of your stay.

New Zealand

Your passport should be valid for at least one month from the date of departure.

Singapore

Your passport should be valid for at least six months.

South Africa

The rules state that your passport should be valid for at least 30 days from the date of departure, but it is recommended that you have at least six months on your passport before it expires. Your passport should also have at least two blank pages when entering or exiting South Africa.

Thailand

Your passport should be valid for at least six months.

Turkey

Your passport should be valid for at least six months.
