Ryanair passenger numbers rise in May

Ryanair’s passenger numbers rose by over 1 million in May as the airline industry continues to make a strong comeback following the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

yanair carried a total of 15.4 million passengers in May, compared to 14.2 million in the previous month. The low-cost airline reported a load factor of 92 percent for the month, up 1 percent from April.

The strong May figures also marked a 756 percent increase from the 1.8 million passengers the airline registered last year, before restrictions were eased in many markets.

The airline operated over 88,400 flights in May, up nearly 6,000 from April, showing growing demand for travel.

So far this year, Ryanair’s passenger numbers stand at 123.9 million, a 310 percent increase compared to the same period in 2021.

Demand for flights comes amid ongoing airport disruptions due to staff shortages in Dublin, Amsterdam, Brussels and Manchester, among others. Dublin Airport experienced long queues outside and inside both terminal buildings last weekend, causing more than 1,400 passengers to miss their flights.

The airport will now head into the June bank holiday weekend with a security staffing level at 70 percent of pre-pandemic levels.

Ryanair has also rejected the DAA’s request for an 88 per cent price increase in airport charges, with Chief Executive Eddie Wilson commenting: “The DAA should instead focus on fixing attitudes to provide efficient customer service through security, instead of inventing new fees for facilities that no one wants and which harms tourist recreation.”
