A Ryanair steward was reportedly fired after drinking alcohol on a flight.

Sam Thompson, 26, was reportedly filmed drinking a miniature bottle of wine and a recording of Jack Daniels from a drinks trolley on a flight from Rzeszow, Poland, to Stansted, Essex last Wednesday.

He was said to have had a drink with a passenger in the back of the plane before making a rude gesture at the camera.

Thompson was arrested after the plane landed.

A passenger who asked the crew for a drink said he was shocked when Thompson started drinking with him.

He said The sun : “I asked for a drink and when he came over he said to me, ‘Shh, don’t tell anyone, but I’ll have one too.’

“Then he started having a shot of whisky. He also had a 187ml bottle of rosé.

“He sounded drunk and looked like he’d been drinking longer than just on the flight.

“I asked to speak to the captain and he was furious.”

In video given to police, the steward can be seen sitting near the exit door, apparently drinking rosé.

He is then seen trying to hide his drinking from other employees.

A Ryanair spokesman said crew would not be allowed to drink alcohol for up to eight hours before or during a flight.

Thompson was reportedly given a breath test by the captain and reportedly had 50mg per 100ml of breath, The Sun reported.

The legal limit for driving is 35 mg.

The flight’s staff are said to have been restrained and approached by the captain, it said.

Essex Police said Thompson, from Hertfordshire, was charged with “performing an aviation function, namely being a member of an aircraft cabin in flight when her ability to do so was impaired due to alcohol”.

He was fired from the airline and is due to appear in Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on June 8.

A Ryanair spokesman told The Mirror: “Lauda Europe’s policy, in line with European Aviation Safety Agency regulation, prohibits the consumption of alcohol by cabin or flight crew from 8 hours before a flight service until after the service has ended.

“Lauda Europe has investigated a reported cabin crew violation of this strict policy on a flight from Rzeszów to Stansted (May 18). The cabin crew member concerned no longer operates for Lauda Europe.”

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “Sam Thompson, 26, of Cheshunt, was found dead on Wednesday 8 The ability to do so was impaired by alcohol.

“It relates to an incident at Stansted Airport on Wednesday 18 May 2022 in which the charge breaches Sections 92(1)(a) and 95 of the Railways and Transport Safety Act 2003.”
