Rye station closes early ahead of the bonfire celebrations

A train station will be closed this afternoon and no trains will be serving it until tomorrow morning.

The rye station will be closed today from 3:00 p.m. until the start of the service on Sunday for the rye fire celebrations.

A South spokesman said: “We are working with the local Bonfire Society to ensure the safety of attendees and to let people know in advance that there are no train services in Rye after 2.48pm to Ashford International and 2.47pm clock will be given to Ostborn.

“The next trains leave on Sunday morning.”

The spokesman said that train services could not handle the “expected number of people” and that “there was a risk that visitors trying to get home would be stranded because they could not board the last trains”.

The spokesman continued: “Significant technical work on the Brighton Mainline on Saturday prevents us from introducing additional trains to complement the service. The same technical work consumes the local stock of buses that we would need as a backup.”
