A company is voluntarily recalling certain salad dressings sold in Aldi stores nationwide because confusion with labels can lead to “life-threatening” allergy risks.
The problem with TreeHouse Foods’ Tuscan Garden brand Italian dressing was discovered after the company received two “store-level” complaints, according to the announcement on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website.
The recalled products may have labels that say “Italian restaurant-style dressing,” but some of the bottles may actually contain Asian sesame dressing. More than just a label mix-up, the problem is that the label lists egg and dairy as the allergens present in the product, when the possible content – Asian sesame dressing – actually contains soy and wheat.
This could be problematic for consumers with soy or wheat allergies.
Both wheat and soybeans are among the eight major food groups responsible for 90% of food allergies, according to the FDA. Under the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) of 2004, foods or ingredients containing these eight major allergens must specifically list them “in clear language” on the labels “to make it easier for consumers who are allergic to foods and to protect their Caregivers to identify and avoid foods that contain important food allergens.
“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to soy or wheat are at risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction when consuming this product,” the company noted in its press release.
Therefore, those who may be in possession of the recalled products are advised not to consume them. Instead, customers can discard the salad dressings or return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.
The recall involves a batch of Tuscan Garden Restaurant-style Italian dressing products with UPC number 4099100074871 and a best before date of August 10, 2023. They were shipped nationwide from August 23 through September 23 Driven out of Aldi branches.
“No other grades or UPC numbers are included in this recall,” the announcement clarified. “At this time, TreeHouse has not received any reports of an allergic reaction related to this product.”
