Even without the apparent global recession we are plunged into, the astronomical increases in energy costs will wipe out lives. In more ways than one, we’re stepping back into a past that many of us never experienced.

Pub in Cornwall, south-west England, now turns off the lights on Mondays, with pints being served by candlelight to avoid firing staff. In Brussels last week, some restaurants went further – not just by candlelight, but also raising awareness of their plight by turning off their ovens for several days and only serving diners drinks and food that didn’t require electrical appliances.
