In an interview with Limit lineMendes said he would love to see a female director in the next Bond film.
“I think the actor who plays Bond is going to evolve, the director has to evolve. I think it would be great to see a woman directing Bond. I think that’s amazing.”
It should be noted that the most powerful person in the Bond field is producer Barbara Broccoli, so a woman’s voice has helped shape this series for a long time. But from Mendes’ point of view, Bond has never seen a female director take the helm, and to quote Lizzo, it was a damn time.
There’s a whole different conversation about who will be the next Bond, but I think Mendes is on to something when thinking about the next iteration beyond the guy in the plush suit. Each generation deserves a Bond to call their own. Craig is the perfect Bond for his time, post-9/11, more serious about conspiracy and espionage, and he has plenty of craftsmen to help lead the way like Mendes, Martin Campbell, Marc Forster and Cary Fukunaga.
Whatever the new Bond, I hope the lesson they’ve learned from the success of the Craig era is that audiences want something that delivers the action, stunts, sexiness, and glamor that the franchise has to offer. famous commercial, but in a new, refreshing way. That starts with a script, continues into the casting process, and will be reinforced by the director behind the camera.
