Sam Taylor-Johnson joins live biopic Amy Winehouse – Billboard

Director Sam Taylor-Johnson has been invited to direct the biopic about late singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse.

Studiocanal is behind the project, titled Back to black, backed by the Winehouse property. Matt Greenhalgh wrote the script, with exact plot details currently unknown. An on-screen search for Winehouse is expected to begin soon.

Grammy Award-winning singer known for her second album Back to black, which includes the chart-topping records “Rehab” and “You Know I’m No Good”, among others. The singer once battled alcohol and drug addiction, died at the age of 27 of alcohol poisoning.

Studiocanal is producing with Alison Owen and Debra Hayward, along with Tracey Seaward.

Winehouse’s career and death are the subject of Asif Kapadia’s documentary Amy, which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2016 Academy Awards. There is also a 2021 documentary film. by BBC Reclaiming Amy, marking the tenth anniversary of the signer’s death.

Taylor-Johnson directed the first season of Fifty shades of gray Franchising. Other Taylor-Johnson feature credits include The boy has no place and One million pieces. She is represented by the CAA, Brillstein and Sloane Offer.
