Grime artist Sami Switch said “this is the beginning, not the end” after losing a copyright battle with Ed Sheeran.

The musician, whose real name is Sami Chokri, shared a tranquil clip of the ocean on his Instagram page while discussing his “highway of gratitude.”

“Through desperation, I immediately found a path to gratitude,” he captioned the short clip.

“I am rich, full of love, friends and family. This is the beginning, not the end.”

His post comes after Ed won a High Court dispute over whether his 2017 song Shape Of You copied his song.

The judge’s decision on whether the Smash copied part of the 2015 song Oh Why was announced Wednesday morning.

Ed, along with his co-writers John McDaid and producer Steven McCutcheon, denied stealing Sami’s song.

Sami and co-writer Ross O’Donoghue had claimed that an “Oh I” hook on “Shape Of You” was “strikingly similar” to an “Oh Why” chorus on their track.

In a remote ruling, Judge Zacaroli said Ed “neither intentionally nor unknowingly copied the sentence.”

He acknowledged in a written judgment that while there are similarities between the two sentences, there are also “important differences”.

After the verdict was reached, Ed also posted a video on social media discussing what happened.

In the video, Ed said: “Such claims are now far too common and have become a culture where a claim is made with the aim that a settlement is cheaper than going to court, even if there is no case for the claim gives.”

He added: “I just want to say I’m not an entity, I’m not a company, I’m a person, I’m a father, I’m a husband, I’m a son.

“Lawsuits are not a pleasant experience and I hope this ruling means that unsubstantiated claims like these can be avoided in the future.”

The Shape Of You co-writers launched legal proceedings in May 2018, asking the High Court to declare that they did not infringe Sami and Ross’ copyright.

Ed and his co-authors also released a statement following the verdict, discussing the toll the case had taken on their mental health.

They added that they will continue to defend themselves against “baseless claims”.
