In the wake of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, both SAP and Oracle have announced that they will cease all business activities in Russia.
The decision by the two major IT providers followed a request from Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who posted letters he had written to both companies on twitter yesterday.
In his letter to Oracle, Fedorov wrote: “The IT industry always supports values such as responsibility and democracy … now more than ever, people’s lives depend on your decision.”
oracle replied to the tweet, which stated that the company had “suspended all activities in the Russian Federation” on behalf of the Ukrainian people and their elected government. However, since the tweet was published, the company has not commented further on the situation.
SAP also responded publicly, publishing a blog post titled by CEO Christian Klein “Stand in solidarity” On Wednesday. “Like the rest of the world, we view the war in Ukraine with horror and strongly condemn the invasion,” Klein wrote.
SAP says it has halted business in Russia in accordance with global sanctions, pausing all sales of SAP services and products in the country.
What this means for existing Russian customers of SAP and Oracle software is currently unclear.
Other organizations, including Amazon, Apple, Disney, Google and Ford have all taken steps to restrict the availability of their products and services in the region, along with financial services, entertainment and oil companies. The music streaming platform Spotify also announced theirs Office in Russia would close indefinitely.
At a joint press conference in Lithuania this morning, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, along with heads of state and government from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, said: “It is important that we step on the gas” when it comes to sanctions against Russia.
Russia responded with the promise of tax exemptions and immunity from conscription for domestic IT workers.
