Sarah Palin, who is not vaccinated against coronavirus, dined indoors on Saturday night at Elio’s, an Italian restaurant on Manhattan’s Upper East Side that regularly attracts celebrities, despite New York City’s requirement that all guests in the house present proof of vaccinations. She tested positive for the virus on Monday.
Luca Guaitolini, the restaurant’s manager, who doesn’t work on Saturday night, said: ‘We just made a mistake, but confirmed Ms Palin’s visit. In an interview on Monday, he said that the restaurant was checking immunization cards for all first-time customers but not for regular visitors each week, and that Ms. Palin had dinner. with a longtime visitor, whom he declined to name.
“She could have just walked in and walked past,” Mr. Guaitolini said. “We’re trying to dig into this.”
Ms. Palin’s attorneys did not respond to a request for comment. Mr. Guaitolini said that the restaurant is notifying customers that they have been exposed to the coronavirus and that staff will be tested this week.
Ms. Palin, the former governor of Alaska, who ran for vice president in 2008, went to New York for trial her defamation lawsuit against The New York Times. The trial was set to begin this week, but because of her positive test result, now it will start on february 3. According to the judge in the case, Ms Palin’s lawyers reported that she had received three Covid tests, all of which were positive, and that she had not been vaccinated.
Shawn McCreesh, a New York Magazine writer, tweeted On Saturday, he spotted Miss Palin at Elio’s when he went out to dinner on Saturday night. (“My mom thinks she’s Tina Fey,” he Written in a follow-up tweet.)
Brian Schwartz, a political finance reporter at CNBC, tweeted that he also had dinner at the restaurant recently and that the staff there had not verified his vaccination status.
New York City recorded 8,914 cases of the new coronavirus on Sunday, according to a Times database, 19,634 fewer than the previous Sunday. Hospitalizations, those late, have increased 106% in the past two weeks.
Because the Omicron variant is so contagious, some restaurants have adopted it more stringent safety measures for workers than government requirements, including keeping Covid tests on hand and taking the wearing of masks seriously. But at many restaurants, including at Elio’s, the only requirement for diners is that they be vaccinated.
Elio’s, which opened in 1981 on 2nd Avenue on East 84th Street, is known for its celebrity clientele, including Tom Hanks, Joan Didion and Mick Jagger. Obituary for restaurant founder Elio Guaitolini, who died in 2016, described it as “an intimate clubhouse for Manhattan’s social and media elite.”
His son, Mr Guaitolini, said Ms Palin “was a controversial person wherever she went. I just hope she recovers quickly.”
