Saturday Night Live Season 48 premiere hits super Meta with Miles Teller and Jon Hamm

“SNL” starts off on a high and never really reaches that hilarious climax again for the rest of the night. That’s because the chilling open meta happened when Miles Teller and Andrew Dismukes as Peyton and Eli Manning (respectively) hosted an unorthodox version of the “ManningCast” commentary series on “Monday Night Football”. Instead of focusing on football for ESPN, they provided live commentary on the opening sketch from “SNL.”

We’ll forgive this sketch’s logistical leap going live while allowing the Manning brothers to pause and provide their own commentary as the sketch unfolds. If they were watching the show live, this wouldn’t be possible. If they’re seeing the sketch after the fact, how can it be the first sketch of the live episode we’re watching? Is this silly to ponder? Sure. Do I care? No, not in the least. I’m a spoiled man, and my brain is weird. Anyways…

I can’t believe I never realized how much Miles Teller looked like Peyton Manning until now, and he also has a solid impression of him. It’s funny how comedy writers flip their pen and write jokes at their own expense. Not only did they lament the public use of another sketch by Donald Trump, but they also mocked the variety of tropes for which “SNL” has been known over the years, including several flubs that occur in the live show. The commentary on the new cast was great, as was the surprise appearance of guest star Jon Hamm, who joked about the show’s inability to get the “real” stars of “Top Gun: Maverick.” This prompts even more meta commentary from Miles Teller as Peyton Manning, who correctly observed that it was not uncommon for the presenter to appear in the cold open state, making this a snap quite special. And he’s not wrong!

All the self-aware comments and jokes made this interesting and it was a clever way to open the show instead of making a weaker version of the topic commentary so often overlooked. political coercion and the news made many headlines.
