A savvy mother-of-two has revealed how she saved a whopping £10,000 in two years, after making a dramatic change spending habits when it comes to food buy.

Jamie Tait, from Aberdeen, managed to cut her weekly grocery store price in half when she started shopping separately for items with yellow stickers.

The 44-year-old previously spent £170 to £200 on a weekly shop for her family of four and found that often a lot of items go to waste.

After summing up their shocking spending habits, Jamie and her husband Alan decided to make an effort to reduce their weekly food budget, starting with reducing ‘near-by-the-use’ items instead of real food. Fresh produce and full price.

Now that their weekly shops cost just £70 a week, Jamie can feed her husband and children, Bradley, 9, and Naomi, 6, for just £10 a day.

“I have two jobs and I am self-employed in both areas. When the pandemic hit, my husband and I both had to bear a large amount of money, but we were shocked at how much we earned for the money.” Jamie, who works as a barber, said.

“Our weekly shopping will be £175 or more and we’ve found that we’re running several stores per week so costs can sometimes be a lot higher. I started buying only items. Shop with a yellow sticker and buy a freezer Facebook Market so I can store meat and pies and any other food I can find.

“During the pandemic our spending was so small that I was saving £100 a week by not spending on food. After the restrictions were lifted, I ended up going crazy again. with spending but then went back to the yellow sticker stores again. The difference in spending is insane!”

Jamie stocked up on weekly discounted cakes, fish and chicken items, plus lots of fruit and veg, shopped around different supermarkets for the cheapest prices – and even bought a second hand freezer to save money. Store all products that have dropped.

She said: “Every time I buy a loaf of bread now it takes 10 minutes or less, I can’t buy full-priced loaves anymore, especially you can freeze the reduced ones. I got it. From Co-Op I can buy blueberries, turnips, raspberries and asparagus for £1.93 in total, down from £7.15.

“Fresh fruits and vegetables can also last a long time; people are always quick to throw things away because of ‘shelf life’ but I actually had some fruit in my over-a-week-old porridge, and it tastes really good.

“I’m a food enthusiast, so I like to buy the best quality products and try to avoid junk food. I get a lot of discount items from M&S, like steak sausages for £. 1.20 down from £3 or steak fillet for £1.90 off from £4.78. Right after New Year’s Day 2021, I literally stocked up on a whole freezer of about sale items. 50 pounds.”

As well as fridge and freezer staples, the mother-of-two also managed to pack sweets like fresh donuts in 50p and hot pies in 10p. However, the biggest difference came when they stopped ordering and eating out.

Jamie adds: “I find it much easier to buy fewer fillings and loaves than to buy a sandwich for a meal. I’ve noticed that ever since I started shopping for the yellow stickers, it’s all gone. we ate a lot healthier, and i even lost 7lbs.

“Shopping for yellow stickers has completely eliminated our constant buying of junk food, we’ve instead focused on healthier products for cooking large meals, especially when it comes to to batch meals to eat the next day.

“A lot of our spending has moved in and we’ll be spending £50 or more on each purchase, and we’ll have it twice a week. My goal for this year is to finally take the throne. Our home has been refurbished with necessary upgrades, which I wouldn’t be able to do if our shopping spending remained high.”
