Say what you like about compulsory Irish, but it keeps our love for the language alive

I returned to the Irish language more than twenty years ago for various reasons. I am now among the approximately 75,000 people who are not connected to the education system and who speak the language every day.

Irish people say they have a positive attitude towards Irish and that seems to be true – but few speak it and in fact most prefer English. This view and practice extends to those who play and support Gaelic games and traditional Irish music.
