An 11-year-old girl was killed by a stray bullet at her grandmother’s house while playing with a relative.

The shooting, which took place outside the home, happened around 10:15 p.m. on June 4 at the home on Goulburn Avenue in the city of Detroit, Michigan.

Saniyah Pugh, 11, was reportedly playing with a relative when the stray bullet entered the home and hit her.

The young girl’s grandmother, Lawanda Melton, said: “There is no feeling at this point. I’m deaf, I’m broken. I mean, there are no words – I’m speechless.”

Sandra Turner Handy, President of the 9th Precinct Community Relations Council, said: “It’s about time we stopped crying with the Chief over and over again about our babies being shot.

“11 years old and all she did was enjoy being a kid.”

As the investigation continues, Police Chief James White said two suspects are currently in custody.

He added: “Officials have not exited this investigation.

“They were able to process a number of leads, pull out a number of search warrants and we have one adult and one juvenile in custody.

“Was the house attacked? What do we know?

“We have to be careful that we’re working on this case in a way that we’re reasonably confident that’s what happened, but we don’t want to jeopardize this investigation.

“Just be at a point where enough is enough and we’ll do everything we can to make sure this is the last.”

The victim’s grandmother started a GoFundMe campaign to help with funeral expenses, which have so far reached $11,000 (£9,000) of the $15,000 (£11,000) target.

Melton wrote: “Her mother, Daejanay Pugh, is dealing with the loss of her only child, her daughter. Who loved dancing, playing TikTok, gymnastics and cheerleading.”
