Research has investigated whether yoga – an ancient exercise method that has become hugely popular in the Western world – is the secret to lasting weight loss.

The study enrolled 60 women who were overweight or obese, but lost at least 5% of their weight within 3 months using diet and exercise.

They were then randomly divided into two groups; one took a cooking class for 12 weeks and the other a yoga course for 12 weeks.

Women said they enjoyed the twice-weekly yoga classes and were glad they were included in that group.

And the benefits are measurable when taking into account their weight.

They lost 3.5% more body weight than those who attended culinary school.

They improved more in the areas of stress, mindfulness and mood, the questionnaire revealed.

But the authors note that those who lost less weight initially had no additional benefits of yoga.

“While our findings are preliminary, our data suggest that after a period of successful weight loss, twice-weekly yoga practice can help improve mood,” says Ms. Unicke. and improve skills that are important for regulating emotions and reducing imbalances.”

“Behavioral, successful weight loss over the long term often requires individuals to diligently engage in important weight-related behaviors.

“As you can imagine, staying motivated to stick with these behaviors for the long term can be challenging, especially when weight loss begins to slow.

“This is why we are interested in the psychological benefits of yoga, as we believe it can help individuals overcome some of the behavioral challenges necessary for successful weight loss in the short term. long.”
