Sea Lanes Brighton: Almost 70 percent think membership is too expensive

A public poll has revealed what people think of membership prices for a new oceanfront pool.

Readers polled in The Argus gave their thoughts on the newly released Sea Lanes Swimming Pool Memberships.

The early bird membership, announced on Tuesday, costs £45 a month.

Over 350 Argus readers voted in a poll asking for their opinion on pricing.

Almost 70 percent, 245 people in total, said it was too expensive, consistent with much of the public reaction when the memberships were first unveiled.

Operator South Downs Leisure defended membership prices, citing rising utility prices as the reason for the costs.

Speaking to The Argus earlier in the week, South Downs Leisure’s Duncan Anderson said membership prices are “competitive”.

Around a quarter of those eligible to vote, 88 people in total, said the £45 monthly fee was “about right”.

Mr. Anderson added, “Our first founding membership offer rewards those who sign up early and commit to membership while the project is still building.

“Acceptance for this early membership has been well received and residents are looking forward to taking the plunge as construction takes shape. Member prices will then increase slightly once the charter member offer ends.

“The developers – Sea Lanes Brighton and the operators, South Downs Leisure, have agreed on membership, rental and single use pricing after researching other facilities and taking into account rising electricity prices.

“South Downs Leisure and Sea Lanes Brighton want to ensure that the Sea Lanes facility is sustainable to ensure long-term operations and to help keep Brighton’s community active and healthy.”

Early bird memberships are available now and are limited to the first 500 people who sign up or until December 23rd, whichever comes first.

At this time, the price for a pay-per-swim option is unconfirmed, but a Sea Lanes spokesman said it would be around £10 per swim.

Only 30 people, less than 10 percent of the Argus readers surveyed, said they would pay more for membership. Sea Lanes Brighton: Almost 70 percent think membership is too expensive
