Sean Bean: ‘Many Men Are Made To Feel Like Apologizers For Their Sex’

Sean Bean said “a lot of men today are made to feel like apologetics for their sexuality and masculinity” while discussing his latest acting project.

The 63-year-old British actor has starred in The Lord Of The Rings, Game Of Thrones and recently won a Bafta Award for his role in the BBC One drama Time.

Before starting his latest project, the BBC drama Marriage, Bean spoke to The Times about how he feels his views on men have changed in his post on the world. #MeToo movement.

When asked if he believes it’s harder to be a man now, he said: “Yes, I suppose it is.”

Bean added: “Some aspects of a man’s character are now seen as stigmatizing or evil.

“But I think you have to be careful, we don’t lose track of a man.

“Look at the old heroes of myth, history – there is a great respect for the adventures and strength of a man.

“Many men today are made to feel like advocates for their sexuality and masculinity.

“And I think that’s something that men have to keep and celebrate as much as women celebrate their femininity.”

Bean, who has been married five times and married current wife Ashley Moore in 2017, also shares his views on the use of intimate coordination elements in film and television productions.

Reflecting on how his experience portraying Mellors in the BBC’s Lady Chatterley in 1993 might have been different if intimate collaborators were used at the time, he said: “It would have been spoil nature.

“It would make me more inhibited because it draws the attention of everything.

“Someone said, ‘Do this, put your hand there, while you touch his thing?'”

He added: “I think the natural way lovers behave would be ruined by someone bringing it right down to a technical exercise.”

In the upcoming film Marriage, written by Bafta Award-winning Stefan Golaszewski, Bean plays Ian, with Nicola Walker playing on-screen wife Emma.

The four-part series, which begins on BBC One on 14 August, follows the couple as they learn about the fears, consolations and disappointments of their 30-year marriage.
