Sean McCarthy, 28, who was shot dead in a Dublin flat, was a ‘low-level’ drug dealer, Gardaí, investigating this line of investigation

Gardaí are investigating whether a 28-year-old man shot dead in a north Dublin flat was targeted for his involvement in the street-level crack cocaine trade.

The murder investigation was launched following the discovery of the body of Sean McCarthy in a Drumcondra apartment on Saturday night.

Mr McCarthy had been missing from his home in Poppintree since last Tuesday.

He is understood to have sustained multiple fatal gunshot wounds at a property where Gardaí believe the attack took place. Gardaí have identified a suspect.

He was arrested on Saturday night and was still at Clontarf Garda Station last night, where he may be held for seven days.

Senior sources said the victim was “a low- to mid-level person” in a drug trafficking operation in the Ballymun area, where crack cocaine and other hard drugs are distributed at street level.

“The victim was someone who owed money to high-level dealers but also acted as a debt-collecting heavyweight for a gang, according to Gardaí information,” a senior source said last night. “His involvement in this type of activity is considered a strong line of inquiry in this case,” the source added.

Last night, Gardaí declined to confirm whether an “object” discovered by Garda divers yesterday morning in the Tolka River between two footbridges was the weapon used in the murder.

Gardaí had been conducting a search for Mr McCarthy since last Tuesday, including a detailed search of the Royal Canal at Phibsborough on Friday involving the Garda Sub-Aqua unit and the deployment of the Garda helicopter.

Mr McCarthy is understood to have been visiting the area recently. “The reality of this tragic affair is that gardaí have always searched for a body for several days based on the information received,” a senior source said.

The search continued on Saturday and led gardaí to the Achill Road flat where they found the remains of Mr McCarthy.

Senior sources have revealed the suspect was well known to Mr McCarthy and detectives are looking for no one else on the case.

Gardaí believe Mr McCarthy was shot where his remains were discovered.

Officers also cordoned off a second crime scene in Griffith Park, where two footbridges were temporarily closed.

Gardaí had filed a missing persons report against Mr McCarthy on Saturday afternoon, saying they were “concerned for his well-being and are trying to locate him”. Sean McCarthy, 28, who was shot dead in a Dublin flat, was a ‘low-level’ drug dealer, Gardaí, investigating this line of investigation
