Sean Penn presented one of his Oscars to Ukrainian president Volodymr Zelensky as a “symbol of faith” in the country’s victory in the ongoing conflict with Russia.
The statue, one of two best actor trophies won by Penn in 2004 and 2009, respectively, will remain in Ukraine until the war is over.
The presentation occurred during Penn’s third visit to the country during all-out war.
During their meeting, the actor was awarded the Order of Merit, III degree, by Zelensky, who thanked him for his “significant contribution” to the war effort.
Penn was also honored when his name was placed on a stone on the Brave Way, which recognizes “the brave people who have stood with Ukraine from the very beginning”.
His name will appear next to a list of many world leaders who helped Ukraine during the conflict.
A post on Mr Zelensky’s Instagram page read: “American actor and film director Sean Penn @seanpenn has arrived in Ukraine for the third time in all-out war.
“This time our meeting was special. Sean brought his Oscar statuette as a symbol of faith in our nation’s victory. It will stay in Ukraine until the war ends.
“It is with great pleasure that I present Sean Penn with the Medal of Merit, III. Thank you for your sincere support and significant contribution to the popularization of Ukraine in the world. “
Penn fled Ukraine in March while filming a documentary about the conflict.
