Secretary of State Simon Coveney traveled to Ukraine to visit the besieged city of Odessa

Secretary of State Simon Coveney has crossed the border into Ukraine to visit the besieged port city of Odessa.

r Coveney entered Ukraine at the Palanca border post in Moldova on Wednesday morning and is set to meet Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba to hear about the war and Ukraine’s territorial gains in recent days.

He will be updated on the Black Sea Grains Initiative, which has enabled exports of wheat, corn and sunflower oil to resume in recent weeks.

Previously, a Russian blockade had held up millions of tons of food exports each month, but a partial lifting of the embargo was agreed in July and more than 250 successful trips have been made to date.

As well as visiting the seaport, Mr Coveney will also board a ship due to depart on Wednesday evening as part of the initiative.

Ukraine has said in recent days that it has regained control of 3,000 square kilometers of territory from Russia in a possible breakthrough in the six-month war that began with Russia’s invasion last February.

Mr. Coveney’s visit comes ahead of the UN General Assembly’s meeting in New York next week with the UN Security Council for an update on food security and the Black Sea Grains Initiative.

Ireland will complete its two-year term as a member of the UNSC in the coming weeks.

Prior to his port trip, Mr. Coveney will visit government buildings in Odessa where he will receive a briefing from the Head of Odessa Military Operations and the Head of Ukraine Naval Operations.

Mr. Kuleba is also expected to update the Irish and Lithuanian teams on the six-reactor Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and the latest information on its safety and integrity.

The two foreign ministers and their Lithuanian counterpart, Gabrielius Landsbergis, will hold a press conference in Odessa on Wednesday afternoon. Secretary of State Simon Coveney traveled to Ukraine to visit the besieged city of Odessa
