Senegal and Holland are chosen as World Cup openers before Qatar host the opening game


Senegal and Holland open the 2022 World Cup finals on November 21, while hosts Qatar will have to wait until later in the day for their big moment.

It is the first time since 2006 that the hosts have not opened the tournament after FIFA confirmed the fixture list for the group stage of the finals.

Africa Cup of Nations winners Senegal and three-time runners-up Holland meet at Al Thumama Stadium at 10:00CET for the Group A showdown, six hours before the Qatari take the stage.

The hosts meet Ecuador at the Al Bayt Stadium.

England will also be in action on opening day as they launch their quest for glory against Iran.

Gareth Southgate’s men meet the Iranians, whom they have never faced in a senior game before, at the Khalifa International Stadium. The Group B game starts at 13:00 GMT, with group rivals USA meeting either Scotland, Wales or Ukraine in the evening game which starts at 19:00 GMT.

Defending champions France are in action on Matchday 2 when they meet either the United Arab Emirates, Australia or Peru in Group D at the Al Janoub Stadium in the late kick-off, while Christian Eriksen’s Denmark play Tunisia earlier at Education City Stadium on an equal footing Day.

Belgium, the team they replaced at the top of the FIFA rankings earlier this week, will meet Group F rivals Canada for the first time a day earlier at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium since reaching the finals for 36 years.

The tournament will welcome Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal to the big stage on November 24, while Ghana are their opponents at Stadium 974.

In the remaining group games, England meet the United States, whom they famously lost 1-0 in the 1950 finals, at Al Bayt on Friday 25 November and Scotland, Wales or the United States on Tuesday 29 November Ukraine at Ahmad Bin Ali Both matches start at 19:00 GMT.
