Sex offender faces life behind bars for Sabina Nessa’s murder

A sex offender faces life behind bars for murdering elementary school teacher Sabina Nessa.

Oci Selamaj, 36, drove to London from his home in Eastbourne on the south coast to carry out a premeditated assault on a woman using “extreme violence”.

The garage worker was lurking in Cator Park in Kidbrooke, south east London, before targeting wife Nessa, 28, when she stopped by on her way to visit a friend on September 17 last year.

CCTV footage captured the moment Selamaj attacked Ms Nessa by hitting her 34 times in the head with a 2ft metal traffic triangle before carrying her away unconscious.

He then pulled up her clothes, removed her pantyhose and underwear, and strangled her before covering her body in grass.

The body of Ms Nessa, who taught a first grade class at Rushey Green Primary School in Catford, was found near a community center in the park almost 24 hours later.

Selamaj, from Eastbourne, East Sussex, was arrested in the seaside town and charged days later in her death.

In February, the Albanian national pleaded guilty to murder.

He will return to the Old Bailey on Thursday afternoon to be tried by Mr Justice Sweeney.

At a previous hearing, prosecutor Alison Morgan QC said Selamaj had a history of violence towards his ex-partner, including strangling him multiple times.

Three days before Ms Nessa was attacked, the accused booked a room at the five-star Grand Hotel in Eastbourne, the town where he already had accommodation.

On September 17, he checked into the hotel and, two hours before the murder, contacted his former partner in a failed attempt to engage her in sexual activity.

The defendant’s Nissan Micra was tracked by ANPR cameras and cellphone location evidence driving to London.

He used his bank card at Sainsbury’s to purchase a rolling pin, although it was never used as a weapon.

He entered Cator Park in Kidbrooke just after 8pm and waited half an hour before Ms Nessa arrived on her way to The Depot Bar where she was due to meet a friend.

Ms Morgan said: “The defendant is actually seen loitering around spots in the park before spotting the deceased and checking to see if anyone else was around before turning and running after her.

“Then he is seen moving towards the deceased and hitting her repeatedly with a gun about 2 feet long.

“CCTV footage shows the defendant carrying the deceased, who appeared to be unconscious at the time, up a bench and practically out of sight.”

Selamaj’s actions after that were not caught by the camera, but Ms Nessa was not seen alive.

The prosecutor said: “The man showed up after 10 minutes.

“He is seen picking up pieces of the broken weapon from the ground and then moving back to the area where the deceased was for another 10 minutes.”

The court heard that he removed Ms Nessa’s underwear and pantyhose and pulled her clothing up, exposing her torso.

Selamaj was also seen using wet wipes to clean a nearby bank.

On the way back to the south coast, Selamaj stopped in the Tunbridge Wells area of Kent where he dumped the emergency triangle in the River Teise. Sex offender faces life behind bars for Sabina Nessa’s murder
