Sex offender who molested two underage girls allowed to vacation in Greece before sentencing

A convicted sex offender in the UK who admitted molesting two underage girls was allowed to spend a pre-planned holiday in Greece before his sentencing.

The judge, who accepted the man’s guilty plea, allowed his week-long trip after praising him for his “honesty,” reports said.

Convict Matthew Thompson, 48, pleaded guilty to 10 counts Wednesday, including sexual assault and indecent imagery of a child, for assaulting two unidentified minors, ABC 12 reported.

After Thompson pleaded guilty, his lawyers petitioned the court to allow him to fly to Kos, a Greek island, the next day for his pre-booked holiday.

The judge presiding over the trial, Jonathan Gibson, found the sexual assault case to be “extremely serious” but allowed Thompson to attend the trip. Gibson said his bail did not need to be revoked before his Nov. 18 sentencing.

“You have pleaded guilty and you will, of course, receive due credit for your guilty pleas in due course when you are convicted. You were on bail and I will not revoke your bail just because you made honest pleadings,” Gibson said, as reported by the Telegraph & Argus.

“As you know, you are now subject to sex offender registration regulations and must report to the police before you leave,” Gibson said.

Thomspon must register as a sex offender before his trip and report to police on October 28, the day after he returned from the trip.

In an unrelated incident, an Indian court faced heavy criticism in August after it pardoned 11 men found guilty of gang raping a pregnant woman and murdering seven family members, including their 3-year-old daughter. The men were sentenced to life in prison for the rape of a 21-year-old Muslim woman, Bilkis Bano, during communal unrest in 2002, but were allowed to walk free. A video that went viral on social media showed relatives of the convicts giving them candy and touching their feet as a sign of respect.
