Sexism lawsuit against PlayStation heats up as more and more women join

The proposed class-action lawsuit against PlayStation is returning to the fore after seven former and one current employee made comments regarding sexism in the workplace.

According to Axios, eight women at multiple US-based PlayStation offices shared accounts of company-wide misconduct ranging from “condescending comments, unwelcome advances,” to abandon ideas from female members and lack of promotion for female employees.

A 16-year veteran of Sony Online Entertainment and Sony PlayStation alleges that women are not considered for senior roles in “correction sessions” as much as men. In such a session, only 4 women were considered for promotion compared to 70 men. During the discussion sessions, she heard comments about the home lives of female candidates – comments not aimed at male employees who were promoted.

In a statement issued to the lawsuit, a former female program director said she did not think Sony was “equipped to handle hazardous environments appropriately” and shared that at least 10 women had left her office in California within 4 months.

Before leaving the company in January, she shared a letter with female employees that she wrote to inform her superiors about “gender bias, allegations of discrimination against pregnant women and objection by a senior man in human resources to these accounts,” according to Axios.

A hearing on Sony’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit will take place in April at the earliest.

Back in November, lawsuits were brought against PlayStation for alleged sexism and wrongful termination. Filed by a former PlayStation IT security analyst, the plaintiffs allege that Sony “intentionally violated” labor laws by “willfully, knowingly and/or knowingly paying women less than men.” for essentially equal or similar work.”
