Two British soldiers captured by Russia while fighting for Ukraine were sentenced to a horrible death sentence by pro-Moscow rebels, which Britain immediately branded a “sham sentence”.

Aiden Aslin, 28, and British Army veteran Shaun Pinner, 48, have been found guilty at a show trial in the self-declared Donetsk People’s Republic, a proxy for the Kremlin, of seizing power by force.

It is believed the horrific sentencing of both men will include death by firing squad, in violation of the Geneva Convention’s rules on the treatment of prisoners of war and the immunity of prisoners of war.

They are allowed to appeal the verdict, but tonight it sparked outrage from family members of the two men, military friends and colleagues and politicians.

But a death sentence is torture in itself.

And it is further proof that Russia and its proxies cannot be trusted to operate within the bounds of legality or humanitarian decency.

They are not “mercenaries” as that would mean that they are just guns for hire anywhere in the world.

Militaries around the world, including the UK, have many foreign nationals working and fighting by their side legally.
