Shane Lowry didn’t hide his anger at caddy Brian ‘Bo’ Martin on Saturday after he botched his layup shot as he struggled to stay in contention master.
Lowry, 35, opened his Augusta bid with rounds of 73 and 68, leaving him five shots behind leader Scottie Scheffler going into the third round. However, by Sunday that deficit had risen to seven as the Irishman could only card a 73.
Frustrating for Lowry, his usually reliable short game let him down on several occasions. In stormy conditions is the 2019 British Open The champion regularly misjudged chip shots and putts whistled past, and he would have gone on the 18th, no doubt sensing a missed opportunity.
However, there was one particular mishap for which he clearly blamed Caddy Martin. On the par-5 13, one of the holes regularly targeted for a birdie in the Masters. After finding the fairway with his drive, the Irishman hit his second shot just 125 yards away as he attempted to serve.
That left him 119 yards from the pin, a lot more than he had intended. To make matters worse, he hit his next wedge shot across the green before venting his anger on his right hand.
And from the sound of it, Lowry clearly felt Martin had given him the wrong advice on yardage. “Didn’t give me a shot,” he could be heard saying.
“What the hell was that yardage. Well done, well done Bo. Only 30 meters away. Well done.” It left the Ryder Cup The player must ascend and descend from just under 50 feet.
He failed to make three putts to fall back to three under par. Then he dropped another shot over the last five holes and looked despondent on the final green.
It’s not the only time the pairing has clashed on the course this year. At the Abu Dhabi Championship in January, Lowry aimed for the wrong sign on the 18th.
He landed 30 meters to the left of where he wanted to be. Afterwards, he told reporters, “Yes, me and Bo, we aimed at the HSBC sign, but his was 30 meters to the right of the one I was looking at.”
However, the couple’s relationship was strong, Lowry pays emotional tribute to Martin after winning at Royal Portrush three years ago. He became the fifth Irish player to lift the claret pitcher after Fred Daly, Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke and others Rory McIlroy.
His bid for a second Major isn’t over yet as he sits fourth behind Scheffler [nine under]CameronSmith [six under]and Sung-Jae Im [four under]. However, he has to shoot deep on his last lap to even stand a chance.
