Firefighters battle a massive blaze at a petrochemical plant in Shanghai, with the sky lighting up after reports of an explosion.

Evacuations were taking place at the Jinshan District facility after a fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday, the fire department reportedly said.

The Shanghai Petrochemical Company confirmed that the fire started at 4 a.m. local time and that an emergency response plan was put into action immediately.

Many people have taken to social media to show the flames sweeping through the chemical plant in the southwest of the city.
