Shannon Airport announces new flights to Chicago with United Airlines

In a recent boost to transatlantic travel from Ireland, Shannon Airport has announced a new daily service to Chicago O’Hare International for 2023.

he seasonal summer service, operated by United Airlines, begins May 26 and departs daily at 9:30 a.m. using Boeing 757-200 aircraft.

United previously operated Shannon/Chicago five times a week from 2013 to 2017. The new daily route has a capacity of 30,000 passengers next year, Shannon said.

“Chicago is a truly important US gateway and a positive addition to the daily services we already offer from Shannon to New York, Boston and Newark, New Jersey,” said Mary Considine, CEO of Shannon Airport Group.

“Our aeronautical development team has worked hard over the past several years to ensure the return of this popular service.”

Like airports around the world, Shannon has been devastated by a grounding to fly during the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, the company invested €2.5 million in a new security screening project that eliminates the need for passengers to remove laptops and liquids from carry-on luggage, and has seen a relative uptick in travel this year with over two dozen summer services.

The airport is still operating at only about a third of its capacity and it will likely take 2024 to get the full U.S. route count back, Ms Considine said Irish Independent lately.

United said it expects “another busy summer of international travel in 2023” and that the new daily route comes in addition to its daily service between Shannon and Newark, which returns from April 8.

The news follows two Aer Lingus route announcements – a new service to Cleveland, Ohio, and the resumption of its service to Hartford, Connecticut – both of which will depart from Dublin Airport next May.

“As an island, direct, convenient and competitive access services are critical to restoring inbound tourism growth,” said Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, which launched a new $1 million campaign this autumn to promote direct flights from introduced to the US after Shannon.

Independent Clare TD Michael McNamara described the announcement as a “huge win” for tourism and business in the region. Shannon Airport announces new flights to Chicago with United Airlines
