A shark spotted cut in half on a beach has sparked fears a much larger fish has been attacking it.

Users of online social media site Reddit have speculated as to what caused his death.

On the forums r/sharks subreddit, someone split the gruesome image of the massive shark in two, as if it had been attacked by another beast.

That Daily Star tells how the user came across the sight while walking on the beach.

He said: “I saw this poor bloke on a beach in Oak Island, Canada yesterday, prompting hundreds of upvotes and others wondering what may have attacked him.

The original poster left an image of the shark and asked others what might have been left in pieces, as others suggested an attack by a larger shark.

One user claimed to have identified it as “Atlantic Sharpnose,” an assumption made “based on the nose shape, white patches, and dark back of the back.”

But many other users scratched their heads at how it met its demise rather than trying to identify the species.

Amid the speculation, a user dismissed claims of an accident involving a propeller.

In response to a comment, the poster wrote: “It wasn’t a boating accident! That wasn’t a propeller.

“It wasn’t a coral reef. And it wasn’t Jack the Ripper.”

Another user replied: “It was a shark Great White Shark. Definitely not a great white shark but I have seen many sharks being eaten by other sharks. There’s always a bigger fish.”

A third backed the claim that it was a shark attack that saw the smaller shark ripped in half, writing: “Another shark would do that all day, every day.”

The original poster asked for “Any ideas of any kind [of shark] is it?”, giving others a chance to joke about the shark’s remains.

One user joked that “it’s clearly half a shark,” while another described the find as “leftovers.”

Professor Mark Meekan of the Australian Institute for Marine Science then told National Geographic’s new WILD show Cannibal Sharks that all sharks are cannibals – even the fearsome great white sharks.
