A sea turtle made a happy escape after confronting a fearsome tiger shark.
The incredible moment was caught on camera and showed the two sea creatures grappling violently near the water’s surface.
The sea turtle miraculously managed to escape the shark’s clutches just before they closed their jaws.
The heart-in-mouth video clip was captured by photographer Dylan DeHaason on Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia, approximately 1,200km from Perth.
Dylan described the encounter as one of the wildest things he’s ever seen.
It appeared that the turtle was cleverly using its shell to prevent the shark from catching it, instead turning around to smack away any contact.
Dylan said he had seen a similar incident before, but was never able to capture it on camera.
“I spend a lot of time filming and photographing nature, but this is in my top five things that I’ve seen,” he said Yahoo News Australia.
“The tiger shark finally gave up when the turtle put up a great fight.
“The turtle managed to get to the beach out of reach of the tiger shark.”
Considered one of the largest sharks, the tiger shark commonly reaches 10 to 14 feet in length and weighs over 385 to 635 kg.
Earlier this year, dramatic footage showed the moment a giant tiger shark pounced on a paddleboarder, piercing his board and throwing him into the ocean off Western Australia.
Brodie Moss filmed the remarkable footage as the giant predator attempted to catch a giant turtle just inches below its toes – and narrowly missed when the shark bit through its paddleboard instead.
The footage was shared by Brodie to his one million Instagram followers, as well as on his YouTube channel, YBS Youngbloods.
He wrote on Instagram alongside the video: “A humiliating reminder to myself that it’s her ocean and I’m just a visitor!
“I love sharks and that little accident wasn’t the big guy’s fault.”
Western Australia is notorious for being one of the top shark attack locations in the world.
Back in November 2020, a bodyboarder was beaten to death near Broome, making it the eighth fatal attack that year.
