Shazam! Director David F. Sandberg almost directed a completely different superhero movie

For “Spider-Man” fans, Venom is a well-understood and long-standing villain who’s been causing trouble for Spider-Man since his creation in 1988. For outsiders , his origin is extremely difficult to understand. The story tells – very briefly – that Spider-Man, while visiting an alien world (don’t ask), entered a machine that wrapped his body in a brand new all-black Spider-Man costume. It is eventually revealed that his new outfit is not fabric, but is actually a living, intelligent alien blob that can bond with the host organism and change itself into clothing. Eventually, the blob got too deep into Spider-Man’s brain, causing him to painfully separate himself from the symbiote. It then entwined with a man named Eddie Brock, Peter Parker’s rival, turning into a large, canine, cannibal version of Spider-Man. Functionally, Venom (as it is called) is Spider-Man’s evil twin.

Rueben Fleischer’s 2018 film “Venom” is comfortably segregated from “Spider-Man,” and Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is merely infected with an alien parasite. When it emerges from its body and wraps around Eddie, it looks like a shark made of asphalt and has a nose. Venom may have been a part of the mass consciousness for 30 years, but it still looks ugly.

Sandberg revealed that he was once offered the chance to direct “Venom” when a fan asked blankly if he had ever been offered anything. Sandberg’s response was brief: “I read the script and had a meeting about ‘Venom’ but I went down the road of ‘Shazam!’ and felt that I would rather do that than pursue ‘Venom.’ “

It’s as simple as that. Sandberg just wanted to do “Shazam!” than.
