Prince Harry recalls his relationship with his late aunt, Princess Margaret, in his new memoir Spare.
The Duke of Sussex’s all-inclusive memoir detailing family feuds, teenage rebellions and the inner workings of the royal family, was officially released today (10) January 1), after being leaked 5 days earlier.
In it, Harry discusses his relationship with his great aunt, Princess Margeret, sister of Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away in 2002.
Recalling his early memories of “Aunt Margo”, Prince Harry explained that he “felt nothing for her, except a little pity and a lot of anger”.
“She could kill a houseplant with a single frown,” he writes in his autobiography of ghosts.
Describing Princess Margaret as showing “coolness” towards him, Harry went on to recall one Christmas Eve at Sandringham Estate, the royal family’s country residence, where his great-grandmother gave him a gift. unusual gift.
Harry wrote: “In front of my pile of presents, I choose to open the smallest gift first. “The tag reads: ‘From Aunt Margo.’”
“I looked over and called out: ‘Thank you, Aunt Margo!’”
“I hope you like it, Harry,” she replied.
“I tore the newspaper,” the duke described. “Is that… A biro?”
“I said, ‘Oh. A small creature. OH.'”
“She said, ‘Yes. One biro.’”
“But it’s not just any biro, she points out. It has a little rubber fish wrapped around it.”
“I said, ‘Oh. A biro fish! YES.'”
“I thought to myself: It’s cold-blooded.”
The Duke of Sussex later explained a revelation he experienced growing up: “I saw that Aunt Margo and I should be friends. We have a lot in common. Two spare parts.”
“Her relationship with Granny is not quite my relationship with Willy, but quite close,” he wrote, referring to his brother, William, now Prince of Wales. “The smoldering rivalry, the stiff competition (mostly driven by the big brother), it all looks familiar.”
Harry then compared his mother, Princess Diana, to Princess Margaret.
“Aunt Margo is not very different from Mother. Both are rebellious, both are seen as sirens. (Pablo Picasso was one of many men obsessed with Margo.)
Recalling when Princess Margaret fell ill before her death in 2002, the duke wrote that “she could not take care of herself. After suffering severe burns to her leg in the bathtub, she was confined to a wheelchair and is said to be in rapid decline.”
Elsewhere in Spare, Harry claims that Prince William assaulted him, revealing when he learned of his mother’s death and acknowledging illegal drug use.
The much-anticipated memoir was officially released in bookstores this week.
