Sheffield United captain Billy Sharp has broken his silence following the shocking incident following his side’s play-off defeat by Nottingham Forest when he was the victim of an unprovoked attack.

The incident came after Forest beat his side on penalties in the semi-finals of the Championship play-offs at the City Ground. Emotions ran high at the City Ground pitch after Brice Samba’s save from penalties gave the home team victory.

But those celebrations turned sour when a supporter charged at full speed towards Sharp, who was standing on the sidelines, obliterating him with a vicious headbutt. The footage has since circulated on social media, and police have since confirmed an arrest was made.

Sharp tweeted: “Brainless idiot ruined an incredible night of football. Congratulations to Nottingham Forest on their win and good luck in the final. As an ex-Forest player, I won’t let a bastard ruin my respect for the Forest fans.

“Incredibly proud to captain this group of Sheffield United players. They gave their all and can hold their heads high. We will come back and leave again. Thank you for all of your messages and support following the incident.”

The 36-year-old Sharp scored 11 goals in 30 starts on loan for the City Ground in 2012/13. In 2015 he returned to hometown club United for a third term.

Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom was furious after the incident involving his skipper. He said: “We see things being thrown at the pitch and things being thrown at it endangering the health and safety of the players and nothing has ever been done about it. Something is being done about it. We saw what happened, we know what happened.

“How can you get into a job minding your own business and be attacked that way? It’s just not okay and it’s all that’s wrong. Too often we hear people condemn it, but nothing is done about it. We are the ones who suffered.

“We saw one of our players get attacked. He’s shaken, he’s bleeding. It’s being taken care of. It’s annoying for many reasons – I don’t want to say too much more about it. He’s being treated.” With.”

A mass invasion of the pitch occurred at the City Ground following Forest’s win in the play-off semi-finals

Chief Inspector Paul Hennessy of Nottinghamshire Police said in a statement: “A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with this incident. He remains in custody and is being questioned by officers.

“Our investigation into the circumstances of the incident is ongoing. We have spoken to the player involved and are working with both clubs who are assisting us in our investigation.”

And Forest released a statement after the game, in which they wrote: “Nottingham Forest Football Club is appalled to learn that our former player Billy Sharp was attacked at the City Ground after today’s game as he left the pitch. The club will work with authorities to locate the individual so he can be held accountable for his actions, which will include a lifetime ban from Nottingham Forest.

“The club would also like to apologize to Billy personally and to Sheffield United Football Club.”
