Shephard is delighted when Glanmire seals the double

The address UCC Glanmire are the champions of the Super League after beating DCU Mercy 80-54 yesterday.

This is their first Super League title since the 2016/17 season and completes the double for Mark Scannell’s side who also won the National Cup in January.

“It’s great, we’re happy, we had a very, very good season. The girls have been very focused and worked very hard all year and they deserve everything they get today,” Scannell said.

“It’s nice to wrap it up today, it’s always been difficult to get here but we’re thrilled and happy to get it over with now.

“We’ve probably prepared harder this week than we’ve prepared for any other game apart from the cup final all year and that’s the kind of respect we show them,” he added.

Carrie Shephard again had the highest score for the winners with 25 points, while Tierney Pfirman had 14 points and Claire Melia had 10 points.

For DCU Mercy, her offense was led by Bailey Greenberg on 20, with Alarie Mayze on 14 and Nicole Clancy on eight.

The win came as second-place singleton SuperValu Brunell was beaten 120-74 at home by a rampant Killester.

When asked what was the key to their double win, Scannell added: “I think our depth, we’ve been very lucky with our depth.

“We have two players for each position and the girls on the bench probably don’t get the recognition and respect they deserve

“But I would definitely think that the depth in our roster and the opportunity for different people to come in and do a job each week was something we really liked, especially towards the end of the season.”

Meanwhile, MVP Sarah Hickey shot 30 points to lead Mercy Waterford to the Girls’ School League title with a 72-54 win over Loreto Kilkenny on Saturday, while Coláiste Éanna St Joseph’s 56-42 in the boys’ final defeated. Shephard is delighted when Glanmire seals the double
