This has been a passionate project of Coppola since the turn of the millennium. Now that he’s sold his vineyard to raise money for the film, we have an official diary: “Rome’s fate haunts a modern world that can’t solve its own social problems. in an epic tale of political ambition, genius, and conflicting love.”
LaBeouf will join a diverse cast that includes Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Jon Voigt, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jason Schwartzman, Talia Shire and Laurence Fishburne. It’s a bit of a surprise to Coppola, who’s no stranger to hard work (Martin Sheen suffered a heart attack during the filming of “Apocalpyse Now,” while one of the financial backers of “The Cotton Club” in 1984. was murdered while filming) chose to work with LaBeouf while he was working publicly through numerous personal dramas. The FKA Twigs case hasn’t even been sued.
Again, LeBoeuf is a very good actor, but with the main shoot starting September 6, does 83-year-old Coppola really want someone who seems volatile like this on his set?
Coppola dreams big. If you’ve ever seen American documentary Zoetrope on the “One from the Heart” DVD or listen to its commentary, it’s easy to get caught up in his ambition. Coppola loves people as much as he loves movies. He loves life. This is most likely his swan song. I wanted him to make a final movie on his own terms, without distractions. Here’s hoping he knows what he’s doing with LaBeouf.
