BECAUSE after just 3:40 this afternoon, I can look like a complete idiot.
That’s because everyone will tell you that there was a big conflict between Shishkin and Energumene during the 1st grade SBK Clarence House Chase at Ascot.
But I don’t think it will be a monster clash, given all that before it, it would be interesting to suggest such a case.
My reason is very simple. I have long been of the opinion that Shishkin is a horse from another planet.
There tend not to be too many of them. As such, the possibility that the two will defeat each other overnight seems very unlikely. If not impossible.
Of course I could be wrong, and I’m not worried about that.
I will post on social media, this will make other people feel good. So that would make me happy.
Plus, I have an opinion. And no one has an opinion on a fact that is always right.
Bring it in.
I really wanted to have a ‘Grundy v Bustino’ moment at Ascot today. Haven’t seen the jumps in a while since Desert Orchid v Panto Prince but we’re still amazed when we look back on that race.

Shishkin, representing former championship coach Nicky Henderson and steady driver Nico de Boinville, was beaten only once in eleven starts and that was when falling in the second in a first hurdle. at Newbury at 8-11.
His victories have since included success in 1st place Supreme at Cheltenham and 1st place Arkle at the following year’s fixture. He is also a 1st Place winner at Aintree.
Last time, Shishkin destroyed Tingle Creek winner Greeneteen at Kempton. It took him time to strike, but the boy struck and had a nice shot and hinted at more to come.
In all of those victories, Shishkin mixed the traveling power of a Sprinter Sacre with the stamina of an Altior. Those two Henderson champions are also monsters. I tell you about the animals.
Of course mixed with facts about Shishkin – on the run for the second time after a wind surgery – is my opinion.
Officially, Shishkin isn’t much better than Energumene, who represents batsman Willie Mullins from Ireland and that national champion Paul Townend.
Shishkin is rated 172, Energumene is rated 171. That’s a slight difference in error.
Energumene has only raced eight times and won seven. His only defeat came in the bumper against Navan. In those days, he was detained. Now he’s a quick forerunner.

His Class 1 win came at Arkle at Punchestown – a far cry from his incredible form against no English opponent – and Ryanair Novice Chase was on the same track. He has only faced two opponents and again not so much form.
Most people are judging Energumene on his comeback success at Cork this term, during which he knocked out Daly Tiger nearly ten times.
However, that only tells half the story, as he hammered and clamped the useful Notebook before the opponent left. Energumene continued.
Energumene can be a weirdo. And some of his segment times show that. But he has a lot to prove in my opinion.
First Flow is too good a horse for pitcher Kim Bailey and rider David Bass to need to mention.
Title defender Clarence House has gone from strength to strength this season before scoring at Ascot and Wetherby before being knocked out at Cheltenham and Punchestown.
First Flow returned for this campaign with a battle success at Huntingdon coming out on top for the nearly two-and-a-half-mile ride and scoring in the Rank 2 Peterborough Chase. The form had some substance but it still left its mark. give him about 10lb to find.
The Clarence House has a history of quality.
The Desert Orchid scored in 1989, but look at the other Ascot winners.
They numbered David Nicholson’s Waterloo Boy and Viking Flagship from the same barn. Also the Son of Martha for Tim Forster and Martin Pipe’s Well Chief. Master Minded for Paul Nicholls, plus Sprinter Sacre and Altior as well as Sire De Grugy for Gary Moore and Un De Sceaux for Mullins won the award.
Today I am very sure it will be Shishkin. But I could be wrong!
