FACEBOOK has renamed its News Feed – to “Feed”.
The surprise announcement marks a continuation of the pushback on News Feed.
Facebook has created a dedicated News tab in several countries, most recently France.
And the app has previously said that it hopes to prioritize more interactions with friends and family.
Facebook News is a dedicated tab on Facebook in the bookmarks section that will highlight news stories from a variety of trusted and relevant news sources.
“As part of our ongoing commitment to journalism and content creation at Meta, this new tab will provide people with a dedicated space to search for the stories that matter most to us.” with them.
“While ensuring the original reporting is more widely accessible to a nationwide audience.”
Facebook has come under considerable criticism for its handling of news in the News Feed.
The app has been widely branded as a hub for fake and sometimes dangerous news.
Facebook is now shifting its focus on news to part of the app.
And News Feed will now just be called Feed.
“We’ve been planning this change for a while,” said Facebook TechCrunch.
“We think Feeds better reflect the many types of content people see as they scroll.
“This has nothing to do with the France News Tab announcement.”
News Feed launched back on September 6, 2006.
Before that date, users will have to visit each other’s “walls” to see new posts.
But News Feed means you can see an activity list that updates as new posts are added.
Then, in 2009, Facebook users were given the ability to “like” pages – displaying their content in News Feed.
In September 2011, Facebook changed News Feed so you can see “top stories” – instead of posts in pure chronological order.
Following criticism during the 2016 US Presidential Election, Facebook announced it would clean up News Feed.
“We’re making a big change to the way we build Facebook,” billionaire founder Mark Zuckerberg said in early 2018.
“I’m shifting the focus I’ve given to our product teams from focusing on helping you find the right content to helping you have more meaningful social interactions.”
This includes prioritizing content from friends and family members.
And it prioritizes articles from “local sources”.
